"This guy can play!" were the words Duke Robillard used to introduce Scotty Doubt to John Hammond Jr., backstage at the 1999 Ottawa Citizen Bluesfest. And he proves that he can do just that - and then some - every time he takes the stage.

This award-winning band continues to gain large-scale recognition. Recently, the band beat out six other finalists to win the 2000 National Blues Talent Search, organized by the Toronto Blues Society. And a second nomination in Toronto's annual Maple Blues Awards for "2000 New Artist of the Year" confirms that the Scotty Doubt Band maintains a permanent spot in the national scene. Since winning the 1996 Ottawa Blues Guitar Competition, Scotty has certainly developed a formidable reputation as one of Canada's fastest rising Blues guitarists.

History

Scotty's list of accomplishments since entering the local scene in 1995 features many highlights with the premier Blues acts in North America. These include appearances with artists such as Otis Grand, Dave Maxwell, Tommy Castro, Jumpin' Johnny Sansone, Steve Hill, Tony D, Sue Foley, Suzie Vinnick, Kenny Blues Boss Wayne and the "Prime Minister of the Blues", Dutch Mason. Operating formerly as a guest guitarist with established artists, it becomes obvious that Scotty Doubt has now emerged as a featured addition to the roster of world class Blues talent.

The next natural progression was to apply his traditional, stripped down and clean approach on guitar to a band of his own. Drawing from his contemporary influences, guitar–giants Jimmie Vaughan, Duke Robillard and Ronnie Earl, he stepped on to centre stage with his new project - the Scotty Doubt Band. On June 18, 1999, the five-piece band was officially launched at a much-anticipated shared bill with legendary Downchild Blues Band. Immediately thereafter, the band caught the attention of a capacity audience while opening for the Duke Robillard Band on the Main Stage of the 1999 Ottawa Citizen Bluesfest, now recognized as the second largest Blues festival in North America.

The Band

The Scotty Doubt Band features the explosive stage presence of preeminent entertainer, T.S. Harpoon - an engaging vocalist steeped in the traditions of Rhythm & Blues and Soul music. Originally from the southern United States, "Rev." Billy Mitchell is a true master of the Hammond B3 who makes a seamless transition every night from Blues to R&B to Gospel and back again. The potent rhythm section driving this exciting new band draws from members of Ottawa's top talent with more than 40 years-combined experience. Nigel Troop on bass is a Humber College music graduate and former member of the Tony D Band. Troop displays an "in the pocket" blues style mixed with an enlightened and tasteful infusion of jazz and R&B. The man behind the drums, Billy Brennan, is a traditional player versed in many styles. Recognized for having that distinctive "Brennan shuffle", he's toured the United States and Europe with Jumpin' Johnny Sansone and had the fortune to perform with such legends as Muddy Waters, Buddy Guy, Jr. Wells, James Cotton.

The clean, driven sounds of the Scotty Doubt Band continue to win over new audiences. They are quickly gaining recognition as the band that delivers. Currently working to release a full length CD, they prove to be the band to watch for as they continue to make their mark on the national scene.
